I teach theater history and dramatic literature at Harvard.

My research focuses on the intersections of art and industry, particularly with respect to law and economics. Most of my work explores Anglo-American theater since 1800. I investigate theater using both traditional archival and modern digital methods.

Copyright and the Value of Performance, 1770–1911, my first book, is available from the publisher and other online booksellers.

Recently, I've been writing about democracy and related forms of government, political theory, our political future, and our current democratic crisis.
